The first stallion prospects by Zirocco Blue in the Holsteiner breeding programme were watched with particular interest. Two sons have been stallion graded, one of them Zuccero, a grey from the Badendorf-based Köhncke family’s successful breeding programme.
Good movement is one of the prerequisites for a Holsteiner to be stallion graded and Zuccero performed convincingly at Neumünster. The walk under saddle is very regular and ground-covering. At trot he is balanced, and definitely ground-covering and rhythmic for a jumping horse. The canter is his best pace, energetic, very regular, and carried by powerful hindquarters.
His sire, Zirocco Blue, is a Dutch stallion with international bloodlines tracing back to a French damline through Mister Blue, Voltaire, and Le Tot de Semilly. Under his rider, Jur Vrielig, he has won Nations Cups and international grand prixs and took team gold at the Aachen Europeans in 2015. Mr. Blue used to be a highly successful international jumper under Bert Romp. Voltaire, by Anglo-Norman jumper sire Furioso, was successfully shown at international level by Jos Lansink. His special importance is due to a great number of offspring on the international show jumping scene. Le Tôt de Semilly is one of the most influential French jumper sires. His produce also includes Diamant de Semilly, so he is 2nd sire to Diarado. Zuccero’s dam, state premium mare Zarese, is by Caretino, a stallion himself performance tested in competition who made it to the top 10 of the WBFSH world sire ranking several times due to offspring including Casall, Cristallo, and Chandra. His 2nd dam, Sarese, a state premium mare as well, is by Contender. Zuccero’s free jumping clearly demonstrates the advancement of Holsteiner breeding.
His carefulness and jumping technique are exemplary and unquestionable an inheritance from great Cor de la Bryère. His jumping scope and powerful push-off demonstrate the qualities passed on by his sire Zirocco Blue. Zuccero’s first outings in competition under Maximilian Gräfe were definitely successful. Scoring an excellent 8.8, he won the 4- and 5-year-old jumping horse class held at the Holsteiner Horse Days at Elmshorn. Zuccero’s first crop attracted a lot of attention. His breeding value based on foal evaluation is way above average at 131 points. A particularly typey colt foal by Zuccero out of a Contender-Calando I-Landgraf dam was born in Sweden.
